Why make lip balm at home
Before I get into the step-by-step, let’s talk about why DIY lip balm is a game-changer:
Pure Ingredients: Many store-bought lip balms contain synthetic chemicals, petroleum by-products, and artificial fragrances that may irritate your skin. Making your own ensures you only use safe, nourishing ingredients.
Oh, and by the way, Vaseline lip balm is petroleum. Petroleum has the word petrol in it. Avoid like the plague.
Cost-Effective: A little goes a long way! The ingredients you purchase for DIY lip balm can last for multiple batches, saving you money in the long run. I bought a big bag of shea butter and a jar of coconut oil for a body butter recipe and I’ve used the same ingredients in my DIY lip balm! I haven’t bought anything! Cheap lip balm in shops is not good quality. But when you make your own DIY lip balm, it is the best lip balm!
Sustainable & Eco-Friendly: Say goodbye to excessive plastic packaging and unnecessary waste. By making your own, you can store your lip balm in reusable tins or tubes. I found a clean jar from some curry paste and I store my DIY lip balm in there!
Customizable: Want a hint of colour? A specific scent? Extra hydration? You get to decide exactly what goes into your lip balm. I think it is fun to make your own natural beauty products.
DIY lip balm works great for dry lips or chapped lips.
Making lip balm at home is easy and does not take up a lot of time.
Now that you’re convinced (I hope!), let’s talk ingredients.

Best natural ingredients for DIY lip balm
When it comes to lip balm, the best formulas contain three key components:
Base oils for deep nourishment
Oils help keep your lips soft, hydrated, and protected from the elements. Some of the best oils include:
Coconut Oil – Naturally antibacterial and intensely hydrating. Coconut oil lip balm is the most common kind of lip balm because coconut oil is easy to get hold of.
Sweet Almond Oil – Lightweight and packed with vitamins A and E.
Olive Oil – A household staple that deeply moisturizes and soothes.
Jojoba Oil – Mimics your skin’s natural sebum, making it perfect for sensitive lips.
Butters for extra hydration
Butters add richness and ensure your lip balm stays on longer:
Shea Butter – Loaded with fatty acids and vitamins for intense moisture.
Cocoa Butter – Forms a protective barrier to lock in hydration.
Mango Butter – Lightweight yet deeply nourishing, great for all seasons.

Beeswax lip balm or vegan wax for structure
Beeswax is what keeps your lip balm from turning into a liquid mess. It also helps seal moisture into the lips. You can make a homemade lip balm without beeswax. Below are some suggestions:
Beeswax – beeswax lip balm is the traditional option, provides a smooth application.
Candelilla Wax – for a DIY vegan lip balm, slightly firmer than beeswax so you will need to use less candellia wax in your homemade lip balm recipe.
Carnauba Wax – Another vegan-friendly option, provides a glossy finish.
Essential oils for scent & benefits
Enhance your lip balm with essential oils, but make sure they’re safe for lips:
Peppermint Oil – Provides a refreshing tingle and mild plumping effect.
Lavender Oil – Calming and soothing, great for dry lips.
Sweet Orange Essential Oil – Adds a fresh, citrusy aroma.
Vanilla Extract – Not an essential oil, but a lovely natural scent!
The butters and oils I bought are organic and without the premium price.

How To Choose a Moisturiser
Step-by-step: homemade lip balm recipe
Now for the fun part! This easy DIY lip balm recipe requires just a few steps.
Lip balm ingredients:
2 tbsp beeswax pellets (or candelilla wax for a DIY vegan lip balm)
2 tbsp coconut oil
1 tbsp shea butter
½ tsp sweet almond oil
5 drops essential oil of choice (e.g., peppermint, vanilla, or lavender)
1 tsp natural colorant (optional, like beetroot powder for a tinted balm or even cocoa powder for a chocolate lip balm)
Lip balm tins or tubes for storage. I would suggest using small glass jars. The tubes will be plastic and you’ll want to avoid those.

Odylique Organic Rose Moisturiser
Luxurious yet lightweight this moisturiser contains aloe vera to soothe skin and rose hip known for its antioxidant properties.
Instructions:
Melt the Ingredients – In a double boiler, melt the beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Add Sweet Almond Oil & Essential Oils – Once fully melted, remove from heat and mix in the almond oil and essential oils.
Customize (Optional) – If you’re adding colour, mix in your natural tint now.
Pour & Set – Quickly pour the mixture into lip balm tins or tubes. Let it set for at least 30 minutes.
Enjoy! – Your lip balm is ready to use. Keep it in a cool place to maintain its texture.

How to customise your DIY lip balm
Now that you have the basic recipe, let’s make it yours! Here are a few variations:
For Extra Hydration: Add 1 tsp of honey for a moisture boost.
For a Matte Finish: Use more beeswax and less oil.
For a Glossy Shine: Add a few drops of castor oil.
For a Tinted Balm: Mix in beetroot powder, cocoa powder, or a pinch of cinnamon for a natural colour. Cinnamon makes me think of cinnamon buns. If cinnamon has the same effect on you then be warned that you may be thinking of cinnamon buns all day.
Tip: My lip balm turned out quite hard, but I don’t mind. It looks gorgeous on my lips. If you want your lip balm to be softer, just add less beeswax.
How to store and use your DIY lip balm
Store in small tins or glass jars.
Keep it in a cool, dry place to prevent melting in hot weather. There is no change of that here in the UK though.
Apply whenever your lips need a moisture boost.
Use within 6 months for the freshest results!
