Oestrogen: Age-Defying Skincare Secret?

Sometimes I think: “I wish I was an animal, like a horse” (other animal choices available). I love horses just for their personalities. Horses are kind, considerate, caring and work well in a team. We could learn something from horses.

One thing I have always noticed with horses and all other animals, is that even as they age, there are only few signs of that. Yes, you can look into a horse’s mouth and tell their age. Yes, sometimes you notice the odd grey hair here and there. That’s pretty much it.

This leads me nicely onto the well-known, but despised topic of ageing. I mean visible ageing like thinning hair and wrinkled skin. And no matter how much you are happy with your age; nobody LIKES to look old. You won’t hear anyone say: “Oh I can’t wait till I get wrinkles and saggy skin”.

Nobody says that.

But what can you do about ageing? Is there anything you can do? Should you be doing anything about ageing?

What happens as you age?

As you age, your skin loses its elasticity and becomes wrinkled. As you age, your hair may become thinner. There are so many other effects of ageing. I just want to focus on the skin. Besides, I don’t really want to know or talk about all the horrible things that can happen to you as you age. I am sure that you don’t want to know either.

Anti ageing skincare is a multibillion industry. The sheer volume of products on the market makes it difficult to choose. Let’s be honest, most of the anti ageing skincare doesn’t even work.

I have known about oestrogen skincare for some time, but never really took the time to find out whether it actually works.

So, I have set out to learn more about oestrogen skincare.

I want to know does oestrogen help skin ageing?

What is oestrogen and what does it have to do with your skin?

You will probably know of oestrogen as a female hormone. Sometimes you can get oestrogen and progesterone pills. But do you know what it does in your body? What is the point?

Oestrogen is made up of three hormones – oestradiol, estriol and estrone. Oestrogen affects many parts of the body, from your sensitivity to pain to the blood vessels. Oestrogen has a big impact on the skin, of course.

So, what does oestrogen do for skin? You may ask.

    A lot.

    That’s the short answer.

Oestrogen helps maintain healthy and youthful looking skin. As it happens, the hormone oestrogen is responsible for skin hydration and contributes to the production of collagen and elastin.

You have definitely heard of collagen and elastin.

As you age, your oestrogen levels fall. At the same time, the production of collagen and elastin falls.

    Suspicious connection wouldn’t you say?

A connection that definitely needs to be explored further.

    Will oestrogen help my skin?

If oestrogen levels affect skin, then my understanding is that you can use this hormone to treat ageing skin. You can use oestrogen skin care to alleviate your skin problems.

I would not say that treating your skin with hormones is a well-known or well-researched topic. This doesn’t make much sense. There is a direct link between the level of oestrogen and your skin health.

What I have found is information on menopausal skincare. But I don’t think that using oestrogen in anti ageing skincare should only be used during menopause.

Your oestrogen levels begin to decline much earlier on, in your 30s. I don’t see why oestrogen cannot be used for anti-ageing skincare well before menopause.

The downside of using oestrogen for skin care is that there is not much choice on the market. The skincare that is available can be quite expensive.

I am not clear how well hormone skin care is regulated, if at all. This is the problem with a lot of skincare, to be honest.

That doesn’t mean that oestrogen skincare is ineffective. In fact, the effects of oestrogen on ageing skin have been researched since 1990s at least. Research shows that oestrogen skincare is effective in preventing and treating skin ageing. Now this research was done on perimenopausal women, but I don’t see why younger women shouldn’t try this too.

Another research, using Premarin cream shows improvement in skin thickness and fine lines.

In other words, oestrogen skincare works. To answer the question at the start of this paragraph, research shows that using oestrogen in anti-ageing skincare works.

Potential problems with applying oestrogen cream onto skin

Research shows that when applying oestrogen topically to the face, your oestrogen levels can increase, slightly.

Studies on oestrogen for skincare are not very recent. Most recent research I found was in 2017. The studies included a small group of women (around 70/80). Research needs to be done on large groups to make more impact and show clear benefits of oestrogen for skin.

Studies did not test the long-term effects of using oestrogen for skin.

Despite what I mentioned earlier, all research since the 1990’s confirms the positive effects of oestrogen on skin.

    Other anti ageing skincare

I understand if you feel a little wary about trying oestrogen for anti ageing. But there are other anti-ageing skincare ingredients that you can definitely try out.

Look out for skincare that contains ginseng or royal jelly. As you get older, you are more likely to have dry skin. Royal jelly increases skin hydration without side effects, naturally. Royal jelly can also help increase production of collagen. Collagen helps keep skin youthful.

Similarly, ginseng is a powerful anti-ageing and hydrating ingredient. Ginseng is also natural.

But you can make your own mind up once you try royal jelly and ginseng.

Should you be doing anything about ageing?

It is absolutely not for me to tell you what to do. Ageing is a normal part of our lives. Well, until robots take over the world. There is nothing bad or unusual about ageing.

Hopefully, as we age, we become wiser and care less about what people think anyway. This, I think, is the right attitude.

I will certainly be experimenting with oestrogen in anti-ageing skincare, just because I want to find a cheaper and more effective solution to what the beauty industry is offering currently.
