Milk, especially donkey milk, has been used as far back as ancient Egypt and by a famous Queen Cleopatra

Benefits of milk for clear glowing skin

Did you know that the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra, famous for her beauty, bathed in donkey milk to get clear glowing skin. In order not to deprive herself of this useful activity, she took a herd of donkeys with her on trips. She probably used milk to make a face mask.

But don't quote me on that.

Cleopatra's face cream has survived to this day, consisting  natural ingredients including pork fat, honey, aloe juice, water and a few drops of perfume.

It is no coincidence that these natural ingredients for skin were used in Ancient Egypt.

Milk is one of the best natural ingredients for clear glowing skin. This is why it is one of the ingredients needed for the turmeric face mask. Milk is a natural cleanser and treats acne and helps you achieve clear skin at home; it provides skin hydration as a natural moisturizer as it contains biotin. Biotin or B7 supports healthy hair, skin and nails, which is why you will find this in most, if not all, of the supplements. Only milk contains biotin in its natural form, which would be the most beneficial for your skincare regime.

Milk (donkey or otherwise) and other fermented dairy products, such as yoghurt, contain lactic acid. Lactic acid is a natural exfoliator and is known for removing dead cells from your skin; it helps achieve clear skin and brightens and smooths your complexion. It is a common ingredient in today’s skincare products. Yoghurt is a perfect ingredient for our turmeric face mask.

Lastly, dairy products are low cost.

Benefits of honey for clear glowing skin

Honey has many benefits for your skin. It is worth including honey in any natural face mask. This in an ingredient in my turmeric face mask for clear glowing skin.

Honey has anti-inflammatory properties meaning that it can help treat acne; it is antibacterial – reducing any effects of bacteria causing spots and blemishes. Honey speeds up the healing process and acts as a great natural moisturizer for dry, oily, normal and combination skin.

As with milk, honey is relatively low cost. You are free to get more expensive, luxury manuka honey, if you wish.

I would also add turmeric to enhance the benefits of milk and honey. You probably already know about the many benefits of turmeric for the skin. People have been raving about turmeric for some time now.

But I will tell you about turmeric benefits for skin  anyway.

Why you should add turmeric to your simple face mask

Turmeric comes from a flowering plant of the ginger family and looks very much like ginger root in its raw form. It is more commonly known as a spice, which can be found in most households making it low cost. Turmeric has numerous benefits for skin and for your overall health. This is why it is worth including it in your face mask.

"You may have heard a saying “beauty comes from within”. Well, it certainly does."

Turmeric acts as a wonderful natural exfoliator, leaving your skin bright and smooth. This spice is full of antioxidants, which help prevent cell damage caused by free radicals, leaving your skin looking younger for longer. Like honey, turmeric can reduce spots and blemishes on your face and body.

Step-by-step guide on how to make a turmeric face mask for glowing skin

The wonderful thing with these natural skincare ingredients is that you can find them in your kitchen. This makes these them clean, easy to obtain and inexpensive.

Just so you know, you may have a yellowish tinge after your natural face mask. This is OK. Once you wash your face the following morning, you will have lovely smooth skin.

Our tips for clear glowing skin

You may have heard a saying “beauty comes from within”. Well, it certainly does.

Although natural face masks can help get clear glowing skin naturally, there are further skincare steps you can take.

Tip 1

Drink plenty of water.  Water hydrates your skin and helps keep it clear.

The recommended daily water intake varies depending on sex and the level of physical activity. An average healthy adult should drink 3.7 litres (15 cups) of water for men and about 2.7 litres (11 cups) of water per day for women. You can include tea and milk in this. Coffee tends to dehydrate so this is not included.

Tip 2

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables contain vitamins and minerals essential for clear glowing skin and for your overall health.

All vitamins and minerals as necessary for clear skin and to ensure your body functions. Some vitamins, however, do not stay in your body for long. This means that you need a more regular supply of these vitamins. So make sure you eat plenty of foods containing vitamin C (oranges, blueberries, lemons, tomatoes). Vitamin B is another short-term vitamin.  Natural vitamin B can be found in beans, tuna, bananas and whole grains. So you do not need any synthetic vitamin supplements if you have a well-balanced diet.

Tip 3

Limit your sugar intake.

There are two different types of sugar:

1. Fructose, which occurs naturally in fruit and vegetables and processed sugar. Common fruits which include fructose include grapes, apples, pears, cherries, kiwi and blackberries.

2. Processed sugar is refined and stripped of all of its nutrients. Foods which contain processed sugar include biscuits, chocolate, bread, breakfast cereals, cakes, ice-cream, soft drinks/fizzy drinks, ready-made meals and low-fat yoghurts.

Processed sugar can have negative effects on the skin to include:

  • Clogging pores leading to blemishes and acne
  • Damaging collagen and elastin leading to premature ageing; and
  • Increasing inflammation, which can contribute to breakouts.

It is recommended that in order to keep your skin clear, glowing and younger for longer you should avoid processed sugar and include foods with natural sugars.

To conclude...

To achieve and maintain clear glowing skin takes hard work and dedication. I do think that making a turmeric face mask at home  once a week is quite simple to do. If you choose to follow the simple skincare tips above though, you are not only looking after your skin, you are looking after your overall health. This can only be a positive thing.

Going back to our Ancient Queen Cleopatra – it is clear that she was on to something when she was bathing in donkey milk thousands of years ago.
