Why go DIY with body butter?
Why should we invest time in crafting a body butter when it's so easy to grab one off the shelf?
- Personalization: Tailor the recipe to suit your specific skin needs. You can also make your body butter smell however you like! I love the fresh zesty smell of orange. I am going to include vanilla in my next batch.
- Transparency: Know exactly what’s going onto your skin.
- Economical: Maximize quality without breaking the bank. You can make a lot more body butter for the same price as you buy one tub in the shop. Enough for your family too!
Benefits of key ingredients
Shea Butter
Hailing from the shea tree in Africa, shea butter has many benefits for your skin:
- Moisturizing: Rich in fatty acids, it seals in moisture.
- Healing: Anti-inflammatory qualities to soothe irritations.
- Anti-Aging: Boosts collagen production.
You can just apply shea butter to your skin, without the faff. But I like the feel and smell of the DIY whipped body butter
Cocoa Butter
The sweet delight of the cocoa plant holds:
- Deep Conditioning: Melts into skin to provide an intense moisture surge.
- Repairing: Antioxidants help repair and renew skin cells.
- Smoothing: Reduces the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
Coconut Oil
From tropical coasts, coconut oil brings:
- Hydration: Locks in natural moisture and reduces dryness.
- Antimicrobial: Protects the skin against harmful bacteria.
- Nourishment: Packed with vitamin E for enriched skin health.
Smells gorgeous.
As with all the other butters and oils, you can apply cocoa butter straight onto skin, if you wish.
When making body butter at home you need the oils and the butters. I used coconut oil, but you can use olive oil.
Vitamin E Oil
Often dubbed the magic elixir, it offers:
- Protection: Shields skin from environmental damage.
- Healing Boost: Accelerates cell regeneration.
- Youthful Glow: Fights against age-accelerating free radicals.
Most skincare products include vitamin E. You can just buy vitamin E oil and apply it to lips and cuticles, for example.
What you will need
To begin making your DIY body butter, you’ll need the following:
- 1 cup Shea Butter
- 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
- 1/2 cup Cocoa Butter
- 1 tablespoon Vitamin E Oil
- Essential Oils (Optional: Lavender, Peppermint, etc.) I used sweet orange oil. I love the fresh zesty smell. But you can use anything you like. I think vanilla has a yummy smell too.
- Double Boiler –a glass bowl over 2 inches of simmering water in a pan.
- Mixing Bowls
- Hand Mixer
- Jars for Storage. I recycled glass jam jars. Totally sustainable.
If you are only using shea butter and coconut oil (not coca butter) then the measurements should be like this:
-1/2 cup shea butter
-1/2 cup coconut oil
Everything else is the same.
I very much got the recipe from a website called “It doesn’t Taste Like Chicken”.
Step-by-step recipe
Preparation
Set the scene like you’re embarking on an aromatic adventure. Ensure your workspace is clean with all ingredients measured out and ready for magic.
Melting the Butters
1. Double Boiler Magic: Combine shea butter and cocoa butter in a double boiler. Add the coconut oil.
2. Gentle Heat: Slowly melt them over medium heat, stirring until they blend into a silky pool of golden goodness. Take off the heat as soon as the butters have melted. Don’t overheat.
Chilling and Whipping
1. Cool Down: Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
2. Fridge Time: Place the bowl in the fridge until the mixture begins to solidify slightly but isn't too hard. I left my mixture in the fridge for about 2-3 hours. I think that is plenty of time.
3. Whip It Good!: Using a hand mixer, beat the mixture until it is fluffy like whipped cream—this is your texture goal.
4. Finishing Touches: Gently fold in the vitamin E oil and optional essential oils for a fragrant finish.
Storing Your Creation
Spoon your luxurious blend into clean, dry jars. Store these gems in a cool, dry place. Refrigerator storage extends their shelf life, and each application will feel like a cooling, refreshing embrace.
But, I made a body butter at home and stored it in the bathroom for a number of weeks. It was still just as good. Homemade body butter keeps quite well.
Enhance Your Experience
- Scent Customization: Essential oils like lavender can provide a calming aroma, while citrus oils energize.
- Seasonal Adjustments: For summer, use slightly less cocoa butter for a lighter texture.
- Gift It Forward: Personalize jars as thoughtful gifts that offer a personal touch.

Commonly asked questions
Difference between cocoa butter and coconut oil
Coconut oil comes from a coconut plant. Cocoa butter comes from a cocoa plant. The same plant that gives us those gorgeous cocoa beans so that we can make chocolate. This is why cocoa butter has that sweet chocolatey smell.
Coconut oil becomes a while solid when at room temperature degrees. During those wonderful hot days, coconut oil melts and looks like a clear liquid.
How to make shea butter hand cream?
The body butter recipe above can be a hand cream and a face cream. There is no difference in the recipe. The butters and the oils are great for skin all over your body. That’s the beauty of natural, organic ingredients.
How to make shea butter less greasy?
When making a shea butter and coconut oil body butter you might find it is too greasy for your skin type. You can make the body butter less greasy by adding a tablespoon of cornflour to your body butter mix during the whisking stage.
Can I use my homemade shea butter and coconut oil body butter on the face?
If you have particularly oily skin then you can try using the body butter on your face. If it doesn’t agree with you then stop applying it to your face. If you want a lighter oil then I recommend rosehip oil in my article here.
If you have dry skin, you can apply the body butter on your face.
I mean all the ingredients are great. These ingredients are full of benefits for your skin so I don’t see why you can’t apply it everywhere.
How to keep shea butter from hardening?
This website suggests you add jojoba oil to keep you whipped body butter from hardening. Though they also suggest coconut oil, which I used in my recipe.
In their natural form coconut oil, shea butter and cocoa butter will harden a little, especially if your home gets cold.
It is perfectly natural that your body butter should harden a little. They beauty is that as soon as you apply it on your skin, the body butter will melt into your skin. I also found that this body butter absorbs quickly, great for busy mums who are short on time.
Where to buy shea butter?
Buy shea butter from a reputable supplier. If you are buying shea butter online, do have a look at the reviews. First time I bought shea butter it had an awful smell. Shea butter should have a very light smell, not unpleasant.
